This is my contribution to Mixed Media Monday's "Paint" theme. I made this for a collaborative book. The birds are free-drawn and painted. I used pens and paints for outlining.
I just love Mixed Media Monday and thought this page was a good contribution. :) Hope you like it.
I'm guest host for Mixed Media Monday and naturally I chose brights for the theme. I've been sick since committing to do it, and I have had no inspiration, everything I made turned out pretty horrific so I chose to use a page from my journal instead. My journal is a cross between things I write, whether they be poems, or tidbits, combined with experimenting with paint, mixed media, doodling and drawing. That way I get to keep some of the things I write (I usually just throw them out once I've filled an exercise book).
This one was painted bright pink with violet paint used for shadows and the hand is bright yellow and orange. The background was done using texture paste which was heated (from memory) until it bubbled and then flattened so it's textural without being able to be chipped and so it doesn't damage the page next to it. I'm not sure if the heart in the hand is a stamp or if I free hand drew it, which I think I might have.
Anyhow, it says, to save you from going cross-eyed trying to read it!
My heart it dances-sings-plays- It wishes for things which it Cannot have. My heart it has the ability To break but this does not Mean that it is fragile It means that my heart Does not lend itself To thoughtlessness.
Here's an ATC I made for a swap. The lyrics "I need a little place in the sun sometimes" is from the song Moses, by Patty Griffin. I find myself using lyrics from her songs all the time. It could be that I'm seeing her in just over two weeks in Sydney, and I'm very excited. Check her out if you don't know her music. Her lyrics are fantastic. I've included her song "Rain" for you to listen to. :)
The swirls were done using a Charcol pencil freehand.
Here is a little ATC I made for an Aussie list. The theme was fabric backgrounds, so I painted the background with paints and cut the houses and flowers out of calico and painted them, too. I hope you like it, the house is actually pink and orange, though the scan came out funky and looks rather red.
I was guest host on Mixed Media Monday and I submitted this piece. The theme was birds. The birds are from Somerset Studio's magazine and the eggs are actually real eggs. Two are duck eggs and one is a guinea fowl egg. I used to decorate eggs for many years, and I just love eggs and their shapes. The outside of the frame is thickly covered in texture paste, with other goodies embedded to give texture. Hope you like it. :)
I really love the singer Patty Griffin. I think she's classed as Americana folk, or something equally confusing. I guess you could class her as country. She has a lovely voice, but her lyrics are amazing. Below is a clip of her live. I don't know if it's one of my favs of hers, but the lyrics get me.
Well he jumps in the taxi, headed for the sky He's off to slay some demon dragonfly And he looked at me, that long last time Turned away again and I waved goodbye In an envelope, inside his coat Is a chain I wore, around my throat Along with, a note I wrote Said "I love you but, I don't even know why"
But darling, I wish you well On your way to the wishing well Swinging off of those gates of hell But I can tell how hard you're trying Just have that secret hope sometimes all we do is cope Somewhere on the steepest slope There'll be an endless rope and nobody crying.
Well a long night turns into a couple long years Of me walkin' around, around this trail of tears Where the very loud voices of my own fears Is ringin' and ringin' in my ears It says that love is long gone Every move I make is all wrong Says you never gave a damn for me For anything, for anyone
But darling, I wish you well On your way to the wishing well Swinging off of those gates of hell But I can tell how hard you're trying, Just have that secret hope Sometimes all we do is cope Somewhere on the steepest slope there'll be an endless rope And nobody crying.
May you dream you are dreaming, in a warm soft bed And may the voices inside you that fill you with dread Make the sound of thousands of angels instead Tonight where you might be laying your head
But darling, I wish you well On your way to the wishing well Swinging off of those gates of hell But I can tell how hard you're trying Just have that secret hope Sometimes all we do is cope Somewhere on the steepest slope there'll be an endless rope And nobody crying. And nobody crying, Nobody crying
I hope that this blog can show some of my mixed media work, along with other things. This was one of the first things I made when I decided to try my hand at mixed media. It's a canvas board and the swirls are rub ons. The paint, if I recall correctly, is a lumiere.
